Making the Out of School Period Productive

SWO has been engaging out of school adolescent girls in diverse programs and activities in a means to help them stay true to their values and stay focused on building themselves. These programs and activities are organised as a means to prevent the possibility of them being exposed to the risk of getting pregnant or contracting STI’s…

Girls Inspire Girls Workshop

February 3 2019, SWO organised a one day workshop bringing together 55participants made up of adolescent girls and young women 15 -35years. The worshop themed “Transforming Mindset, Building Resilient Communities of Women and Girls” was aimed at building the self confidence and hope of its participant especially at a period of an ongoing socio-political crisis.

Magic to Cameroon 2019

For our first project in a crisis Region of Africa, we traveled to the politically unstable North-West of Cameroon in October 2019.  A young woman and our good friend from Bamenda, Tebi Honourine, have decided not to let their adversity stop them in their vision and would like to offer children, girls and young women extra-curricular education and security.  To this end, together with her partner Elias and many motivated volunteers, she founded a center for education and women’s empowerment in 2018 under the name “Sustainable Women Organization”( SWO).  We became aware of the organization through mutual friends and want to support Tebi in her vision for improving the situation for women in and around Bamenda.

After our arrival in Bamenda on October 8th, we were first introduced to the safety precautions.  We, as Magic to the World team, this time with Sebastian M., Karina P., Johannes L. and Marcus S., should, according to the ideas of Tebi and their team, spend as little time as possible in the city and outside the rooms of the  Spend education center to minimize the risk of incidents or even kidnapping.  Accordingly, we needed a good plan for the next few days, which we then worked out after a brief introduction by all those involved.

With a donation budget of € 2,500 (link to the donation page), we have decided to support the following areas of activity of SWO through new acquisitions or investments:

IT workshop and computer lessons on the donated devices Menstruation education event for girls and young women on International Girls’ Day, including meals and single-use sanitary napkins, funding for future programs for the production of reusable sanitary towels and cleaning agents  from Confident Kids Care (CKC). Acquisition of a printer and flipchart board for organization and as a source of income. Construction of a hairdressing and beauty salon for the training of women Setting up a bank account, for more professionalism and the opportunity to receive funds

Thanks to the technology donated by our members and friends, SWO can now used them for training of children in the neighborhood as well as for women who e.g.  want to build up an entrepreneurial independence, offer lessons in the use and application of computers and office programs.

With 7 donated laptops, several photo and video cameras as well as 2 smartphones and corresponding storage media, Tebi and her team can now strengthen the technical skills of their targets and prepare them better for a digital life.

Menstrual education and reusable bandages

On “International Girls’ Day”, Tebi and her team from SWO invited young women from the Bamenda area to the center to listen to a lecture by a trainer.  Since in these traditionally shaped village communities the menstrual period is often still a taboo for discussion, Tebi has set itself the task of providing educational work here.  “My period – my pride” is intended to encourage girls not to accept their cycle as a burden but as a natural process.

After the lecture, during which questions could be asked quite openly, the girls learned how to make reusable sanitary towels and how to clean them hygienically with a homemade detergent.

Magic to the World e.V. would like to finance this offer for many girls in the Bamenda region, which is why we have made material and money available for further workshops of this kind.

Painting lessons, furniture for the center and construction of a beauty salon

Also as part of the Confident Kids Care Program, i.e. the extra-curricular education and care for the children of the neighborhood, we organized a painting afternoon together with Tebi’s team and redesigned the interior of the center by SWO.  We also had solid tables and benches made at a local workshop.  Together with a flipchart board, these can also be lent for conferences etc., which means that SWO can generate a small income.

Immediately after our departure, the construction of another room for the center began, in which a beauty salon is created with simple utensils that can be used for the training of women.  It is taught by trainers and volunteers how hair extensions, hair and nail care and make-up advice can be offered as a service, with which the women can build up financial independence.

Thank you for your support!

Thanks to your donations, we were able to give Tebi and her Sustainable Women Organization great support for their further development.  Even if the circumstances in North West Region of Cameroon are very uncertain and scary right now, she and her team want to create educational opportunities for women in the region and offer them a safe space for exchange and development.  We hope to be able to support SWO and its projects in the future and will share news from the Region here or on Facebook!

Providing Aid for Young Mothers

The last 3 years has been particularly difficult considering the ongoing crisis in the North West Region of Cameroon. This has left a lot of people displaced, unemployed and not able to support their families. SWO through assistance from ….. is providing young mothers with skills in hair dressing and tailoring with the opportunity to work and take care of their children.
